The board books that worked at age two won’t do much for a curious seven-year-old. A bilingual bookshelf needs to grow alongside your child — in both languages, not just one.

Some of the most useful books in our house weren’t bought for any grand educational reason — they’re just the same story, twice, in two different languages.

A pile of books that never get opened twice is a familiar shelf in a lot of houses. A few things tend to separate the books kids actually ask for again from the ones that quietly gather dust.

One parent speaks the home language fluently. The other doesn’t speak a word of it. It’s an incredibly common setup — and it doesn’t mean the second parent has nothing to offer read-aloud time.

It’s easy to measure a second language by what a child can say out loud — and easy to worry when that number seems low. But speaking is only half the picture.

You don’t need special bilingual editions to make picture-book time work double duty for language learning. The books you already own will do just fine.

Cherry blossoms in spring, star-crossed lovers in July, a mountain of mochi at New Year’s — Japan’s calendar is full of seasonal moments, and every one of them has a picture book waiting to go with it.

“Say hi to Grandma” — and then thirty awkward seconds of a child staring at the screen, unsure what to say next. A picture book can rescue that call.
